Victoria-Jungfrau Grand Hotel & Spa
Between historic heritage and contemporary design in the Bernese Oberland
The Victoria-Jungfrau Grand Hotel & Spa at the foot of the Eiger, Mönch, and Jungfrau Alpine peaks between Lake Thun and Lake Brienz, is steeped in tradition. The fashionably elegant building combines the spirit of the end of the nineteenth century with modern interior design, and is one of the most exclusive houses in Switzerland. In the bathrooms, today’s sensuousness and opulence is provided by MADISON.
Private residence, guest house, grand hotel: the Victoria-Jungfrau’s eventful history can be traced back more than 150 years. In 1856, a young businessman acquired the former doctor’s house in a picturesque location on the avenue-lined Interlaken Höheweg. In just a few years, famous architects Friedrich Studer and Horace Edouard Davinet transformed the building into a magnificent refuge. At the turn of the century, a new dome-topped central structure finally linked the Victoria with the adjacent Jungfrau hotel – conclusively turning the extended grand hotel into a Swiss icon of the Belle Époque. Royalty and scholars, writers and creative artists from all over the world resided here, including Marc Twain and the Emperor of Brazil.
The charm of this epoch can still be felt everywhere in the hotel: in the golden mirrors, the stucco walls, ceilings of the rooms, and the dazzling crystal chandeliers. Today, this historic heritage blends with contemporary design elements. The successful combination of traditional and modern can be found in the luxurious spa, the three restaurants and the two bars, as well as in 216 rooms and suites. The latter are spacious and designed for comfort. Spaces suffused with light and light-coloured parquet floors are complemented here by classically stylish furnishings, fine silks, and a harmoniously balanced range of colours. Carpets in abstract colour patterns keep creating surprising contrasts.
The bathrooms are designed in a similar way: the style is defined here by white marble with hazy streaks of light grey. It covers the walls and floors in large tiles, as well as appearing on the washstands. During the major refurbishment between 2021 and 2023, MADISON was installed in all the bathrooms. It is as if the nostalgically elegant fitting were made for this ambience. Its design language is reminiscent of the bathroom culture of days gone by, while the Chrome finish fits harmoniously into the whole ensemble. Just like the Victoria-Jungfrau itself, MADISON combines the splendour of the past with a sense of well-being and contemporary luxury.
