A bridge between politics and art.

"American Index of the Hidden and Unfamiliar" is the title of a series of work by Taryn Simon, that was exhibited at the MMK (Museum of Modern Art) in Frankfurt in 2007 with the support of Dornbracht Culture Projects. For the project consisting of more than sixty large format photographs, the American artist had documented places that shape the image of the United States, but remain closed off to a broad audience. Some of the motifs are the Ku Klux Klan, a Scientology seminar room and the CIA headquarters. Inasmuch as conditions allows, the artist takes photographs with a large format camera and careful lighting. In doing so, she intentionally departs from the tradition of the journalistic snap shot.
